I'm a cosmetic chemist and I have a sincere interest in personal care products that improve the function of human skin and hair.That said, I can't choose personal care products that you're guaranteed to like, because cosmetics have very strong subjective sensory aspects (color, skin feel, fragance, etc) which stand apart from thier physiological benefits (moisturization, sunburn protection, anti-infective, anti-aging, blemish hiding, etc).But I can tell you that I'm a stickler for formulas containing the best available ingredients, formulated with finesse to produce effective, pleasing, and economical products.

La Roche Posay Anthelios products, containing both Mexoryl SX and XL (the Canada/Europe version -more on this below), are the sunscreen products that I would have liked to produce, if I had access to L'Oreal's multimillion dollar budgets and the patents to the key sunscreen ingredients.They are also the sunscreen products that my fair-skinned family and I use daily, despite their restricted supply in the USA and their somewhat higher cost.Why?For starters, the Mexoryl SX component, ecamsule, is superior to all other UVA blockers available in the USA (most specifically Parsol 1789/Avobenzone) because it is photostable:it does not break down in sunlight to form free radicals which can damage the skin.Anthelios is the ONLY sunscreen product containing ecamsule.Second, the Canada/Europe version reviewed here has the additional benefit of Mexoryl XL (drometrizole trisiloxane), a fascinating synergistic sunscreen that also happens to be an emollient.Like Mexoryl SX, Mexoryl XL is patented and available only in the specific formulas from La Roche Posay.

Recently, the USA FDA approved Anthelios products containing the Mexoryl SX (ecamsule)component (but not Mexoryl XL), and although such products are now available in the big USA drugstore chains, the more effective Mexoryl SX/Mexoryl XLcombinations considered in this reveiw are NOT widely available.Apart from Omorfia, who is the Amazon supplier for this review, and a handful of other pharmacies bordering Canada, the only other way to get the "real" Anthelios XL is to travel to Europe or Canada.Fortunately, Omorfia is delightful to deal with, reliable, and has good prices.

I'm on my second purchase of this which my dermatologist recommended for fair, sun spot prone skin. She insisted on this or something else with mexoryl XL and this is reasonably priced for a quality product. First sunscreen I can use under make-up or sweat in during work outs or in desert heat without breakouts. There is no white mess to stain or make clothes or skin greasy or chalky. I don't make a habit of spending time in direct sunlight but I feel protected from every day exposure. Haven't burned when I do reapply at the beach/outdoor events. My derm gave me a copy of an article citing this product and other more expensive ones with mexoryl as the real deal for protection. My HG of sunscreen.

Bought last December and the main reason of choosing this product was the low photosensitivity of its ingredients (so the product stays effective longer).My face appeared red and slightly burned after a round of golf under Northern California Winter Sun. Went back and forth with other brands and singled out the product as the cause.Disappointed as I thought I had found a better protection for an active middle-aged male golfer.
