I adore the natural tan that St. Tropez products usually give me. I'm a a huge fan of the St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse. I also have had good experiences with St. Tropez Everyday Gradual Tan for Body with Moisturizer, MediumDark and St. Tropez Wash Off Instant Glow Mousse. They have all given me beautiful, goof-proof results every time. This St. Tropez Bronzing Lotion however, gave me less than the same stellar results as the other products in the line.

Much like the bronzing mousse version of this self tanner, when applying it looks like your covering yourself with mud. While this lotion version has a much more muddy appearance when applying than the others, that didn't bother me too much since I know what great results I always end up with after the tan has developed.

Just as I do with the other versions, I exfoliated thoroughly just prior to applying. I added a bit of lotion to my hands, knees and feet to keep those areas from getting too dark. I applied all over my body (including my face) and after it had time to dry, put on clothes and went to bed for the night. The next morning I showered right away and just like with the bronzing mousse the muddy bronzer part washed down the drain, leaving a very nice tan (or at least I thought).

I was pleased with the tan results when looking in the mirror. Also the lighting inside my home gave it a great appearance. When I went outside is when I discovered the results were not as flawless as the mousse version has always given me. While all of my skin did get tanned, there were slight variations of depth of color in streaks all up and down my arms. This was most visible on the inside of my arms where the skin is the lightest. Two years of using the mousse version and the gradual tan lotion version for touch-ups have never once produced a single streak on me (and I have very fair skin). But this bronzing lotion version gave me the tell-tale signs of a bottled tan.

A second coat of the tanner the next night helped cover these streaks, but since I know the mousse version works better I've gone back to using that. I decided to give this version a shot when Amazon was temporarily out of the mousse, and I'm glad I did so I know which version performs best.

My search for the best self-tanner, one that leaves skin looking sun-kissed without an orange hue, has lead me to this product. I tried a countless # of self-tanners, from drugstore brands to pricey high-end ones, and none compared to the results I received with this product. This leaves skin with a natural looking tan, a color that I would achieve by spending hours out in the sun (I am olive complexed). I initially used this 3 nights in a row (apply before bedtime) to achieve my desired color and have been re-applying twice weekly to maintain.There are 2 products that are "recommended" that you use before applying the bronzant that I didn't bother wasting my $ on since this is pricey enough (hence the 4 stars).

The first morning, after I applied the bronzer, most of it washed off and my legs were streaked. I sent an email to the company explaining my situation and asked for suggestions to correct whatever I did wrong. They were extremely prompt in responding and I attempted the application a 2nd time. Even though a majority of the lotion washed off in the shower, I was significantly darker. I repeated the application a 3rd night and my tan was quite noticeable and very dark(exactly what I wanted!). My main problem was the streakiness. My legs never recovered from the first night and I was unable to cover up the lighter spots. The streaks just became more noticeable after each application. Also, my feet and hands were darker than every other part of my body! Be careful with these areas. Even though I loved the dark tan I obtained, the lengthy/difficult application process along with the streakiness became too much to deal with after only 4 days.

This is my first self tanner. I'm naturally pale but coming from Venezuela people say I tan pretty easily. However I have never done such sinceI don't like the sun and I try to keep myself pale by applying sunscreen. Oddly enough, last summer I went on a trip and decided to get a spray tan. It was ok but way to expensive so this summer I bought St Tropez after doing a lot of research.

As my first experience I find the product pretty awesome.

-Smell: ok, a little funny right after application but not bad at all.

-Application glove: no good and way to expensive. it broke the second time I used it. You're better of with plastic gloves or even bare hand IF IF AND JUST IF you have baking soda near you.

-Product Application: it takes some time (that is why I gave it 4 stars). for me is like at least 20 -25 min if I apply it all over my body. At first sight is streaky so you have to work the lotion on your skin as if you where painting a pice of art, but the results are great (even applying a lot of it). Once you blended, there are no tan lines at all!!!!

The tricky part are your feetsince they are pretty dry. That is the hardest part of the body to apply product. Ankles and knees totally safe and natural looking.

Color: not orange AT ALL. I have olive undertones so maybe that's why I don't see any orange but is great, the color is like a light golden brown, not to dramatic but people will notice. However, I have to apply it 2-3 times a week to keep the same tan. Also, I use jergens self tanner moisturizer faceand body (great product too).

Price: I don't have other products to compare but I swear is 10 times better than the tanning Salon, and the results are prettier! it just take A LOT of time to your beauty routine.

Tips:

I didn't exfoliate right after. I dry brush my skin everyday so the results are even better except for my chest. Since I don't dry brush that area the lotion is almost impossible to blend so YOU DO WANT TO EXFOLIATE otherwise any product will be a disaster. Dry brushing is great for your health so go ahead! start a week before applying St Tropez. You can get the brush here in amazon (I have another reviewon it) or in whole foods for around 10 15 dollars.

Face: do not apply too much, half a pump will give you a natural glow, is more likely that you'll also use make-up so don't over do it. Jergen's gradual self tanner for your face is great for it. I do that for 2-3 days and then apply st tropez lotion. For exfoliation I use Olay Regenerist MicroDermabrasion and Peel Kit once a week. Sugar works too.

SUN SCREEN IS IMPORTANT. That's why I recommend applying St Tropez at night after showering, so the color can sit in your skin and the next day you can apply your regular moisturizer and sunscreen. I recommend Cetaphil and LA Roche Posay Sunscreen.

-Make up: Laura mercier tinted moisturizer in NUDE and Milani bronzing powder #2 are amazing products because I think that their color is VERY VERY similar to the glow that St Tropez lotion gives to your skin. I believe there are other great products out there but somehow, the color of the 3 together look very natural and healthy.

This is by far the best self tanner! I have spent years looking for one that is not orange and leaves an even dark, but natural tan. I get compliments on my tan all year round. No need to fake and bake in the tanning bed anymore! It looks like melted chocolate when you apply but it washes off your hands easily. I sometimes use latex gloves when applying and that works great too! It is worth every single penny. It lasted me a year. I just bought my second bottle. Enjoy!
