We discovered Catcus Juice while in Honduras, and not only is it an excellent sun screen, but it keeps the bugs away almost better than the Deet product we bought with us, but instead of leaving out skin all deety, sticky and full of chemicals, it leaves your skin soft, and smelling fabulous.

Cactus Juice is a good bug repellent. It does pretty well in repelling both mosquitoes and biting flies. Unlike DEET, which creates a cloud of chemical that surrounds you, Cactus Juice seems to work by contact. Thus, unlike DEET, if you have a region of skin without treatment, the biters may find it and chomp down. So you have to be thorough in application. Of course, it isn't a neurotoxin or whatever, as DEET apparently is. So you probably aren't hurting yourself by using it frequently. I have skin allergies to some additives and fragrances found in lots of consumer products, and hate most of the cheap fragrances they put in stuff, so I was really happy that CJ smells good to me and doesn't cause skin issues.

Nota bene Cactus Juice makes a number of different skin products that can be hard to distinguish online, so make sure you're getting "Sun & Skin Outdoor Protectant" rather than one of their other lotions or whatever. Also beware the monster shipping charge that some online retailers have. A year ago I looked around the web and ran across shipping charges over 8 bucks!
