Peter Thomas Roth Uber-Dry Sunscreen SPF 30
Non-chemical sunscreens appeal to me but who wants to spend the day looking like a Geisha girl from the white face effect of zinc oxide? I have tried sunscreens that feel creamy smooth and look great on my skin, but are lacking in decent protection, those with a great protection pedigree that are just sticky and/or so shiny and oily that they make you want to wash your face and just forget it! And then there are the so-called "dry" sunscreens like this one. A wonderful concept, but like every other sunscreen, they have some trade-offs.
UVA PROTECTION:
I can't find a photo-stabilizer for the UVA protection in this sunscreen listed in its ingredients.
The only three ingredients approved by the FDA that can protect skin from UVA damage (the one that ages you) are Avobenzone (chemical), titanium dioxide, and zinc oxide (both white physical barriers). Outside of the US, Tinosorb and Mexoryl SX are also UVA-protecting ingredients, Mexoryl being arguably better or at least more photostable than our Avobenzone (i.e. exposure to sunlight breaks it down and reduces its effectiveness.)
This sunscreen (and the Neutrogena) both use Avobenzone. My major issue with this sunscreen is that it appears to contain nothing to photo-stabilize the Avobenzone. Normally you see octocrylene with Avobenzone because it's the most popular stabilizer. I don't see anything in the list of ingredients that matches any of the listed Avobenzone photo stabilizers I can find and that concerns me.
DISCLAIMER: That doesn't mean there isn't a stabilizer in there that is just going by a different name. Organic Chemistry courses were a long time ago for me and they certainly didn't cover sunscreen compounds so I have only a very basic knowledge of this subject and you should do your own research. It also doesn't mean it's not a good sunscreen. It might mean you need to put it on several times a day, which is a bit inconvenient if this is your daily sunscreen and you wear make up over it.
FEEL AND APPEARANCE ON YOUR FACE:
Overall, I really like the feel of this sunscreen but the Neutrogena dry is very similar in feel and application. This one goes on smooth and easy on clean skin. Very nice. I'd rate this one just slightly higher than the Neutrogena in feel. I definitely like the dry feature and not having shiny or white face, but it pills up on your skin if you rub your face or apply make up over it. (Both this one and the Neutrogena do this.) Perhaps another reason it needs to be applied well and often.
I can't say I like this one TWICE as much as the Neutrogena, though I do prefer it's lack of any scent and I think it goes on just a bit smoother.
ACTIVE AND OTHER INGREDIENTS (AS COMPARED TO NEUTROGENA DRY):
I checked the ingredients to see what I was really getting. There's really isn't any difference in the active ingredients, except a slight variation in percentages. But then with Neutrogena, you can always step up to the 45 spf (or higher) in the same product if you want more protection. Here they are for comparison:
Active Ingredients:
Roth Uber Dry:
Avobenzone 2.00%, Homosalate 8.00%, Octinoxate 7.50%, Octisalate 5.00%, Oxybenzone 3.50%.
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch (30 spf):
Avobenzone 2.0%, Homosalate 7%, Octinoxate 7.5%, Octisalate 5%, Oxybenzone 3.0%
Do you see much of a difference? Yeah, me neither. 1% more on Homosalate and 0.50% more of Oxybenzone, yet both achieved a 30 spf rating. The Avobenzone content is equal. So let's check the inactive ingredients that account for the look and feel and vitamins both promise:
Roth Uber Dry:
Water, Silica, Adipic Acid/Diethylene Glycol/Glycerin Crosspolymer, Glycerin, Vp/Hexadecene Copolymer, Dimethicone, Glyceryl Stearate, Peg-100 Stearate, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A), Ascorbyl Palmitate (Vitamin C), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Phospholipids, Edta, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Squalane, Polysorbate 60, Bisabolol, Cetyl Dimethicone, Xanthan Gum, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate, Crosspolymer, Tetrasodium Edta, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Isobutylparaben.
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch (30 spf):
Water, Silica, Adipic Acid/Diethylene Glycol/Glycerin Crosspolymer, VP/Hexadecene Copolymer, Dimethicone, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Glycerin, Oat Kernel Extract (Avena Sativa), Squalane, Ascorbyl Palmitate (Vitamin C) (Vitamin C), Retinyl Acetate (Vitamin A), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), BHT, Cetyl Dimethicone, Bisabolol (L-Alpha), Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate (Licorice Root) (Licorice Root), Glyceryl Stearate, PEG 100 Stearate, Polysorbate 60, Tetrasodium EDTA, Butylene Glycol, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Xanthan Gum, Benzyl Alcohol, Isobutylparaben, Isopropylparaben, Butylparaben, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance
While I'm not up for a romp through chemical literature on the differences, note that the first line of ingredients is nearly identical. Roth has Glycerin listed earlier than Neutrogena which may explain its smoother feel. Both sunscreens have vitamins A, C and E and various moisturizers.
The big difference to me is that last ingredient in the Neutrogena product, FRAGRANCE. I prefer my sunscreen without. Or maybe I just don't care for Neutrogena's choice of frangance. But then, the Neutrogena product can be had in a variety of different levels of protection, higher than 30 and for half the price.
CONCLUSION:
If you're looking for the absolute best protection in a sunscreen for a day at the beach, keep looking. If you're looking for a good dry touch sunscreen for every day wear, this one is high on my list of favorites. But it is so much like the Neutrogena product, again, for half the price, that I'm not sure it's worth it. If the cost were identical, I would choose this one for it's lack of fragrance and slightly smoother feel going on. And I still might splurge on it once in a while anyway. :)I've been getting professional facials for 15 years and this product was recommended and sold to me by my esthetician for years.Until a few years ago, PTR was an exclusive line available only to practioners but now it's available online (and on QVC).I've always loved this product bc I have fair skin and need coverage that doesn't clog my pores.I can use it around my eyes (not too close) and it doesn't sweat off and burn your eyes out like cheap products. It also gives your face a nice healthy look.My esthetician recommended a different product line when PTR went public and I said I really liked the one I've been using for years and asked if she no longer thought it was a good product. She said, "No, its a great product...I just don't like their business practices" meaning it's no longer exclusive to professionals.Well, that's no reason for me to switch so she's not happy but I am.And the skin cleansers are great too!!!!

If you skin tends to get oily in the summer heat, this sunscreen is great because it won't add a heavy layer of shine like many other sunscreens. It's lightweight, matte finish and blends easily so you don't have white streaks on your face. It isn't overly drying, so you won't have cakey looking dry skin. I have very fair skin and it works very well to protect against sunburn and skin damage. It's also non-irritating and works with even sensitive skin types. I wear it under makeup and don't even need to add a moisturizer when I wear it. I'm very happy with the sunscreen and will be purchasing it again.

The Uber-dry, fast absorbing, non-greasy, no film, no shine claims simply aren't true. This is like any other sunscreen there will be some grease and shine. However, I do really like this sunscreen. I use it as a substitute for lotion and a makeup base for mineral powder. It also doesn't seem to promote acne and actually improves the condition of my skin. Which is why I buy it, despite the hype.I used Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock with Helioplex SPF 55 for years but once open it seemed to get thicker over time and clog my pores. Also, their use by date is stamped in the white area at bottom of tube and impossible to see without a magnifying glass (even with 20/30 vision) so more than once I came home with a tube less than six months to expiration. So its really not cheaper if I am always tossing half the product.I found that this SPF 30 provides better coverage then the SFP 55 (less brown spots). Also, though I do a lot of shopping at Amazon, I don't for cosmetics since there is no customer satisfaction policy after its opened yet the price is near or at list.Might as well go to my Nordstroms or a salon that allows returns any time if it does not agree with your skin.Proactiv Solution 8 Piece Full Size Kit

This is a gift to Women of Color especially! My hair has never had slip like when I use this stuff, the results I get from this are the same as if I go to the salon!
Black women rejoice it has finely come!
My hair even bounces a bit!
I'm the kind of girl who's lazy and doesn't wrap and moisturize (or didn't before), so although my hair is strong and in good condition internally it's not so much the same for style or looks. So this stuff is pretty foolproof lol
This dc is a staple for me now and I will def be combining it w/ my one n only Argan oil restorative treatment from now on!
Another staple for me is the leave-in con! Why can't more leave-ins be luscious creams like this leave-ininstead of sprays that leave your hair feeling brittle!?
My hair is left feeling as soft as the stuffing in a Teddy bear!!!
The shampoo is ok I prefer one n only Argan oil shampoo or elasta QP deep moisture poo and the shine serum feels like a tad much after the deep con and the leave-in.

This sunscreen doesn't feel greasy on your face. You won't have the "white face" effect if you rub in the sunscreen. Be careful, because a little of the sunscreen goes a long way. And the bottle turns blue in the presence of ultraviolet rays!

I purchased this due to the need for a better sunscreen for my kids.On my younger ones with fair skin, it works wonderful. They never tanned or burned at all this summer and it worked great.Very pleased. They still looked fair by the end of the summer. My oldest daughter has slightly olive skin that tans easily and it didn't work at all on her.She came home from 2 hours of outdoor summer camp tanner and tanner everyday.I apply a lot on my kids and want them to be protected. When she started coming home tan I was quite upset!I am assuming it is better for the kind of skin that burns easily instead of just tans.I will continue to use it on my younger ones since it worked for them, but still need to find something for my oldest daughter.

We have four kids, ranging in age from 1-12, and we are vigilant about sun protection (our kids all wear rash-guards as well as sun screens while swimming) and re-applications of lotions but we had several bad burns on our little ones.Last year, we used California Baby products and though it was bit tough to rub in, our kids never burned.
This stuff was greasy too, but I would have tolerated that if it had worked!
Mid-vacation I switched my family from Soleo to a back-up tube of California Baby from last year, and it STILL worked better, even being over a year old!
I'd use this product with hesitancy. If you're going out for a bit of sun here and there, it's probably fine. But if it's your main protection against the sun--think twice. There are better products on the market with low toxicity ratings.Like the other reviewer, I also bought this product due to its low toxicity and high ratings on Skin Deep. However, as soon as I received this product and open it, it smelled like rancid oil and the foul smell last all day after put it on the face. Besides, the oil just separated from the other whitish ingredients. When I squeeze it and tried to applied some, lots of yellowish oil dripped out before I could get to the essential UV blocking white part. No wonder other reviewers also said it's greasy! The other reviewer said this sunscreen didn't protect well. I think this is the main reason. If you only put the oil on the face instead of the zinc oxide (the white part), there's no protection at all.
I also tried Badger spf30 this summer. It's a bit greasy but smells much better and costs less than this one. If you are looking for a zinc oxide only sunscreen, go for Badger spf30 and don't wast your money on Soleo.

OK I love the fact that it is all natural with no bad things in it but it is soooooooooo greasy and even after you bathe/shower it seems to linger on your skin.It worked well at providing sun protection but I don't know if I can get past the terrible feeling it leaves on my skin.

I tried Soleo all natural Sunscreen on the Albuquerque Century bike ride (6/6/09), starting at 6:00 AM, finishing at 2:00 PM, with a partly cloudy sky for part of the ride.Upon finishing the ride I noticed my face and arms were burnt, as if I had not applied any sun block. I previously tried other ~organic sunscreens without this problem.(Now all I have is a very expensive tube of skin oil...)I love this sunscreen and it is worth every penny. No bad smells and safer than most sunscreens out there.I use it everyday and it works well under my mineral makeup. It is a little thick but still I can get it spread without the white residue.Love it!

I bought this product in a salon, but I felt as though I needed to write a review for it on Amazon.First of all, this is a FANTASTIC lotion for someone who wants to start using a tingle lotion. The first time anyone uses a tingle is the worst.Your skin will get used to it the more that you use it.I bought this product three weeks ago, and I can barely feel the tingle now.For someone who has never used a tingle, it might be a good idea to mix this product with a lotion that you normally use to tone down some of the heat.I used Swedish Beauty Dark Escape, then I lather on the Pink Diamond, and I am the darkest I have ever been!If you are scared to use a tingle, then my suggestion would be to use Designer Skin's Obsidian so that you can feel what a heat lotion feels like, and then move to Pink Diamond.Obsidian has a warming sensation that (in my opinion) feels wonderful especially when it's colder outside.
Hope this helps! :)

After being tired of getting crud in my eye every single day decided to try something to make my pathetic eyelashes grow a bit longer.........this stuff seems to work though it is quite expensive........my eyes burn for a few minutes after putting this on (so to prevent this i put it on and just sit in my chair with my eyes closed for about 3 minutes to keep it from getting in my eyes as its drying)......have been using it for about a month and have to say my eyelashes are much fuller and somewhat longer than before.........good product if you can afford it!I purchased this product on Feb. 17, 2012 and I have already started noticing some extra length, hopefully it will continue to work and help my lashes to fill in also. If the price goes back to what I paid for it I would purchase again, don't know if I will if it stays at $20 more than what I paid for it though.I bought lucalash about 3 months ago after having my lashes become short and brittle after using lash extensions. I tried out luca lash and have been using it ever since. I have barely any results. My lashes are still short and thin. I won't buy this again, especially for the price.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock SPF 30 Sunscreens
Finally, I came across a review of this product on Paula Begoun's website (www.cosmeticscop.com). The review sounded good, so I went out and bought some right away. My daughter and I both LOVE this product! It's the only sunscreen we have ever used that doesn't leave a greasy feel or look to the skin. It dries to a matte finish, and works very, very well under foundation, too. Without foundation, there is no need to use powder to kill the shine. And it feels so light on the skin, you barely know it's there!
If you have oily or combination skin and have never found a sunscreen that doesn't look and feel greasy, try this one! It's the best!
I am a biochemist by education and was a teaching in physiology in a university. As such, I am very knowledgeable about chemistry and the human body in general.I really like Neutragena products and this product is certainly very high quality. For most people, I think it offers great protection, but not the best protection for people who need to be very conscious of sun exposure and the possibility of skin cancer.
According to my dermatologist, recent studies have shown that SPF 15-30 wipes off after a few hours and doesn't offer adequate protection after that time. This is partly due to most people not using enough. In other words, they underestimate how much they need to apply to get that level of protection.
For this reason, Neutrogena SPF 45 or 55 is better. Also, the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer products have been updated to include a technology called Helioplex. Most dermatologists that I know feel that this makes a difference in effectiveness and for some people this is going to be very important.
I have used both this product and the higher SPF Helioplex formulations. In practice, I have found BOTH adequate for my needs. What I particularly like is that you don't even know you have the product on.It has virtually no scent and it really is so sheer you can't even notice it.Both of these products stay on a long time and are good for all day use, but my understanding is that the Helioplex formulation is even better.Further, it feels exactly the same on the skin. The only drawback is it's a bit more expensive.
This is also a good product because it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Both are implicated in skin cancer and it's important to protect yourself against both.If you are looking for an everyday sunscreen this might be the one. However, if you want the very best protection try the Neutrogena Helioplex SPF 55.This will give you the most peace of mind.

Recently diagnosed with melasma, I was told that I must wear SPF 30 every day, regardless of my level of outdoor activity. I struggled to find a product that I could wear under foundation. Even the high-end department store cosmetic retailers couldn't provide a product that didn't leave that traditional greasy feel. This product is fabulous -moisturizing but not greasy. With or without make-up, it leaves your skin looking and feeling great. And it hasn't irritated, inflamed, or otherwise bothered my very sensitive skin.

I have tried many "non-oily" sunscreens to use on my face, but I am always left with that heavy feeling on my skin and that sunscreen smell.I recently bought this one at my grocery store to use on vacation to Arizona & California. I was pleasantly surprised by this productit doesn't feel oily or heavy when applied and once dry feels as though I am not wearing sunscreen on my face. I spent two weeks out west with plenty of sun time and never burned. I would highly recommend this sunscreen to anyone who hates that sunscreen feeling on their face, but doesn't want premature aging or skin cancer!Excellent product!

I cannot say how well this product really compares to other sunscreens in terms of sun protection. But it does have the right ingredients that most top-rated sunscreens/sunblocks use, so it should be at least on par with them.
Where this product really shines (or DOESN'T shine) is for people with combination/oily skin. I have tried MANY sunscreens, and it's so hard to find a sunscreen WITHOUT moisturizers (if you have oily skin, that's already your natural moisturizers).
I have even tried other NEUTROGENA sunscreens that are supposed to be OIL FREE and all that. The result on my face? After applying it, I always SHINE (which is NOT what I want).
This magnificent product, however, actually gives my face a nice MATTE finish... and matte FEEL, too! It's a pretty thick cream when you first apply it (as opposed to other suncreens or other products that feel more like LOTION), but is almost immediately absorbed by the skin. In 30 seconds, there is no more greasy/creamy feeling, and in one minute, if you feel your skin, there's a nice matte feel.
HOWEVER, and this is not the fault of the product, after about 3 hours (at least for me), then I feel like the matte effect has worn off, and my oily skin is again showing its oily nature.
Still, as far as suncreens go, this is the best I have tried for my skin, and I highly recommend it for people with combination/oily skin.
BTW, this review is for the actual product I got, which is SPF 30. As of the time I am writing this review, here in amazon they also offer an SPF 45 version, and cheaper, too! I don't know the difference, but I always go for the LOWER one (in this case, SPF 30), because I theorize -rightly or wrongly, I don't know -that the lesser the SPF, the lesser the strength of the ingredients, so maybe it's better for sensitive skin (?).
Olay Regenerist Advanced Anti-Aging DNA Superstructure UV Cream, SPF 25, 1.7 Ounce
First, aesthetically, the lotion is white and pretty thick very similar to a sunscreen. I did not notice on the box or as part of the description that it was a CREAM, and it definitely fits the bill. It's easy to get good coverage over your face because of this; some facial mosturizers/sunscreen are very watery. The fragrance is the typical Olay smell, but is a lot more potent, in my opinion. I'd applied the lotion, then my makeup and had breakfast. My husband was about 5 feet away and he asked me if I could identify that strange smell. It was the Olay.
Homosalate, the main ingredient, does bioaccumulate and is on a watch list for Japan and Canada. All of the main ingredients are categorized as medium hazard by the Environmental Working Group's Cosmetic database. The product was not listed in the database, so I looked up individual ingredients to decide if this was a product that I'd consider continuing to use. It contains BHT, which is a chemical I've been trying to avoid.
I also found it a bit ridiculous that the side of the box says "Children under six months of age: consult a doctor." Would people really use this (and anti-aging product) on their kids?! On the plus side, the package was easy open, and the plastic is recyclable.
The SPF is 25, which means that for me, if I were spending a day in the sun, I'd either have to take this with me, or reapply something else. It wouldn't be sufficient to keep me from getting burned. It's also not clear *WHICH* UV rays it blocks: UVA, UVB, or both.
Other than that, my skin did feel hydrated when I had applied it. I experienced a small breakout as my skin got used to the heaviness of the cream, but my skin adjusted.
Overall, I think the product is fine and would work for many people. Given the strength of the fragrance, the SPF 25, the BHT, and wanting a product that blocks both UVA and UVB, I probably will not be purchasing this cream for myself.
I've been using this cream daily for around 2 months and I haven't noticed any changes in my skin, although I certainly don't expect my fairly young-looking skin to transform magically back to skin like a 20 year old. I have sensitive, normal-to-dry skin and this moisturizes well enough for the summer, but I doubt if it will be enough to keep me hydrated when the furnace kicks on.It goes on smoothly due to it having some silicone added, soaks in quickly, and doesn't dry sticky at all.
However, I really hate the scent.Maybe I'm a little more sensitive to fragrances in my skincare products than the average person. The scent of this is herbal/medicinal, and it lingers way longer than I like it to.And yes, it has SPF 25, I do applaud Olay for upping the SPF in this product over most of their others which have an SPF 15.
This product has some parabens in it as preservatives, but I don't worry much about those.I've been using skincare with parabens for 20 or so years, and they haven't hurt me yet. What I don't like and it really upsets me is Olay still tests on animals when there is no reason to do this there are plenty of other ways to test without having to dab this in the rabbits' eyes.

()This is a moisturizer and sunblock in one. I have become accustomed to applying my moisturizer first than my sunblock (a physical not chemical). Just a quick tutorial physical sunblocks contain zinc and can be applied after moisturizer, whereas many sunblocks are actually chemical (like helioplex) and must be applied before a moisturizer. Yeah I know doing the chemical sunblock before a moisturizer just doesn't seem right. But I digress.
The Olay regenerist encompasses both moisturizer and sunblock. So its a one application and then you go. Now keep in mind because its a moisturizer its more cream-like in texture (thicker) and when applied on hot days (like everyday during the summer) can produce a heavy feeling.Ultimately making this product more ideal for colder days (winter and fall) and less practical for summer and spring.
There is a scent. So for those of you who do not like scented moisturizers, stay away. It can be strong and lasts for most of the day. Would have preferred a scentless version.
Ultimately does it do what it claims yes and maybe. It certainly is moisturizing and a good sunblock. Does it defend your DNA? that I wouldn't know unless I had an electronic microscope.
In summary its a solid product I would recommend for the Colder seasons as a combo moisturizer sunblock.
()These products don't tend to do much repair work, so don't expect some miracle fountain of youth formula here, but as a sunscreen it's fabulous, and protecting your skin from the sun is the most important thing you can do to fight wrinkles.
It goes on creamy, spreads well, and has a very faint and pleasant odor. It's not greasy. It soaks in fast and gets out of the way to put on make up.Overall, it's one of the better products in the category.

()I used Olay products for years and trusted the brand name for a long time. This product doesn't turn me off of Olay products although I've tried to switch my health and beauty products to ones that have ingredients I can actually pronounce but I really did not like the Olay Regenerist DNA Superstructure UV Cream.
The cream is not so creamy. It's quite heavy and difficult to smooth on to my skin. Even when I use just the small amount dispensed by the pump, it takes a while to rub it in, and then if I am out in the sun, sweating makes the stuff run down my face. Also, there is a very strong perfume scent to the product (it makes me sneeze), and I found that not only did I have that same scent on my face, it was nearly impossible to wash off my hands after using the cream, so I end up smelling the stuff that makes me sneeze throughout the day.
I had to stop using this product after a few attempts. It just doesn't work for my skin or lifestyle.
