Badger Natural Sport Sunscreen SPF 35

If you are in the market for a mineral sunscreen, Badger Sport Sunscreen SPF 35 is a very good option. Aside from zinc oxide, it has only five other ingredients. It is water-resistant which can be a problem of other very fine products from distributors such as Purple Prairie Botanicals which aren't water-resistant.

If you are not familiar with this type of product, namely mineral sunscreens, you need to keep in mind:

Mineral sunscreens, unlike chemical ones, do not absorb into your skin. They act as a physical barrier to the sun's damaging rays. This is in marked contrast to chemical sunscreens that rely on chemicals to disperse the sun's damaging rays. These chemicals are absorbed by the skin and are the problem. If you check out EWG.org, you will see a listing of each ingredient in the sunscreen you select and the potential damage (allergy, hormone disruption, cancer, etc.).

Mineral sunscreens rely on Zinc or Titanium minerals as their primary ingredient. Because of this, you are going to have to deal with a white residue from mineral sunscreens (thus, their name). In my research, this is the most common complaint. My family concurs with this -especially if you put on the amount you are supposed to.

Lastly, people have complained about the odor of this sunscreen. This can easily be solved by looking at the very SMALL list of ingredients: olive oil, beeswax, cacao seed butter, shea butter, jojoba seed oil. For me, it smells of olive oil and shea butter.

I wish that the size of the tube and the cost were a bit more equitable considering how much you are to put on to maintain the SPF.

The Badger Unscented Broad Spectrum SPF 35 Sport Sunscreen is given a very high safety rating by the EWG Skin Deep Cosmetics Database which means that it contains no known potential irritants, carcinogens or other toxic ingredients.Also, its efficacy in providing UVB/UVA protection is highly rated.However, I have two problems with this sunscreen:

1.My primary concern is that this sunscreen is extremely thick, quite possibly the thickest sunscreen I have ever tried!For that reason, I am limited as to its use and cannot use it on my face.I would rather not have to buy a separate sunscreen for my face and therefore prefer sunscreens with more of a lotion consistency for faster, easier application anywhere.

2.This unscented sunscreen has a strong, definite scent which, although not that unpleasant, is not supposed to be there!The scent is very similar to that of my colloidal oatmeal hand lotion and could be due in part to shea butter, a common ingredient in both.

Bottom line:If you need a very safe, effective sunscreen for any part of your body other than your face and don't mind a distinctive scent, this would certainly be worth a try!

I'd been using Coppertone Sport SPF 50 for the last few years, which seemed to work fine, but recently, I've been having photo-sensitivity issues, where despite accurately applying the sunscreen, I'd break out in nasty hives (and occasionally, welts) from being outside.Not so good when you're a nature photographer & outside in the Texas heat!I'm also day-glo white, thanks to a job that keeps me indoors for the majority of the day (seriously, I swear I glow in the dark), and my fair skin is highly prone to sunburn, so a good, protecting sunscreen is a MUST.

After receiving high Environmental Safety ratings, and reading up on Badger Sunscreens, I thought I'd give this a try.

The Good:

* I haven't any photo-sensitivity issues with this sunscreen. Not one single itch, hive, or welt.

* There is a scent, and as another reviewer stated, it smells vaguely of oatmeal.I tend to be somewhat sensitive to odor, but this didn't bother me.

The Bad:

* Sad to say, I still ended up sunburned. Not as bad if I'd gone without, so I'll give it some credit there

* I do know that with a mineral-based sunscreen, you have to rub & rub & rub it in, yet despite doing that, allowing about 10 minutes before allowing contact with cloth (ie, my shirt), and a full 1/2 hour before going out into the sun, it still ended up rubbing off all over my car, my camera bag, my clothes, and everything else.

* It also sweated off fairly easily, particularly at the crooks of my elbows.

* As another reviewer pointed out, it's also greasy.I always end up washing my hands after application, before I can touch anything, and I still end up having to scrub.

As the title says, I really don't know how to call this one the good is enough to keep me using it, but I'm quickly getting disillusioned, and looking for other alternatives.

CONS: 1) This sunscreen is sooo greasy that you will leave residue all over anything you touch (i.e. my car stearing wheel, my clothes, cellphone, anything!). I felt gross. 2) It leaves a white cast on your skin no matter how much you rub it in. I looked like a Japanese Kabuki actor walking around my neighborhood. And I'm already pretty white to begin with. 3) It is very thick, so rubbing it in is difficult. I had to tug at my skin, which may've caused more wrinkles than the sunscreen was supposed to prevent. 4) The scent is NOT unscented. It smells like oatmeal dough batter, but... not very good dough. Someone else described it smelling like dog biscuits. That's fairly accurate.

PROS: 1) I was very confident in the protection it provided. It has one of the highest levels of zinc oxide available on the market. 2) The ingredients are non chemical and safe for use according to the Environmental Working Group's 2012 Sunscreen Guide. It was rated as one of the best sunscreens.

Sadly I had to return it. It is ok if you plan to go out and get all sweaty (like at the beach or for sports). But for an everyday sunscreen, I couldn't handle it. Sorry Badger! I'm sticking with my Burn Out Clean and Clear.

The Badger Natural Sport Sunscreen protects from the sun well, but there are a couple of things that make it not one of my more favorite sunscreens.One it's doesn't soak in easily, it takes forever and you have to rub in until your skin almost hurts to get it to soak in, the second, is then is doesn't come off easily, and I mean in the shower with soap and water, it's really hard to get that clean feeling on your skin after using this.But as far as protection this did well as long as you reapply every couple of hours.
